About Us

The Roswell Astronomy Club is a local group of people who are interested in astronomy and enjoy learning about outer space, celestial objects, and phenomena.  The club also participates in local events, such as the Dragonfly Festival at Bitter Lake, Star Parties, and Moon Gazes, while sharing its enthusiasm with the community.

Club History:

The Roswell Astronomy Club, founded by Mildred Jones began in the early 1960s at Pueblo Middle School.  Students who had a B average or better could join the club, which met in the afternoon.  In 1968, the club was moved to Goddard High School since Ms. Jones transferred there.  The club went public later that year when the Roswell Museum and Art Center allowed the club members to use its auditorium.  In 1969 after the Goddard Planetarium was built, Jim Waldrip, the planetarium director, invited the members to start meeting there.

Jim Waldrip organized Star Parties and had the members meet in a field west of Roswell off Brown Rd.  During the Star Parties, the members saw a lunar eclipse and Halley’s Comet.

The following people have been presidents of the Roswell Astronomy Club: Donald Vigil (first), Billy Beck, Roy Frazor, Stan Nelson, Steve Snider, Dwaine Brown, Gene Sherwood, and Peggy Bohlin (current).

There are currently over 25 paid members of the Roswell Astronomy Club as of April 2021.
